What Is an ERP Implementation Roadmap?
An ERP implementation roadmap is a structured plan that lays out every phase of rolling out an Enterprise Resource Planning system — from initial requirements gathering through to go-live and post-launch support. Because ERP systems touch finance, inventory, HR and operations at once, an unplanned rollout is one of the most common reasons implementations run late or over budget.
The Typical Phases of an ERP Rollout
A typical roadmap moves through discovery and requirements (mapping current processes and pain points), system design and configuration, data migration from legacy systems, integration with other software, user acceptance testing, training, and a phased or full go-live — usually followed by a stabilisation period where the vendor or implementation partner provides hypercare support to fix issues quickly.
Why a Roadmap Matters
A clear roadmap matters because it sets realistic expectations with stakeholders, forces decisions about data cleanup and process changes before they become blockers, and gives the business milestones to measure progress against. Skipping the planning phase to "just get started faster" is the single most common cause of ERP projects stalling midway through.
