What Is GST e-Invoicing?

GST e-invoicing is the system under India's Goods and Services Tax framework where B2B invoices are electronically reported to and validated by the government's Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) before they're used. Once validated, the IRP returns a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a QR code, which together make the invoice legally valid — it isn't just a digital copy of a paper invoice, it's a government-authenticated transaction record.

How the e-Invoicing Process Works

The business generates an invoice in its accounting or ERP software in a prescribed JSON format, uploads it to the IRP (directly or through a GST Suvidha Provider), and the IRP checks it for duplication and validates the data before returning the IRN, a digitally signed QR code, and invoice details that auto-populate into GST returns and e-way bills. This removes a lot of manual data entry and reconciliation mismatches between the invoice and the tax return.

Who Needs to Comply

e-Invoicing applies in phases based on annual turnover thresholds set by the GST Council, and the threshold has been lowered over time to cover progressively smaller businesses. For companies already using ERP or billing software, e-invoicing typically means adding an API integration with the IRP or a GSP; for others, it often becomes the trigger to move off spreadsheets and adopt proper accounting or ERP software that supports the format natively.
