What Is a Digital Twin?
A digital twin is a virtual model of a real physical object, process, or system, kept updated with live data from its real-world counterpart. Instead of a one-time 3D model, a digital twin continuously mirrors the current state of the thing it represents — a machine, a building, a production line, or even an entire supply chain — so it can be monitored and tested without touching the real asset.
How a Digital Twin Works
Sensors on the physical asset (temperature, vibration, usage, location) feed data back to the virtual model in real time. Engineers can then run "what-if" simulations on the twin — testing a new setting, load, or failure scenario — before applying any change to the actual equipment. This closes the loop between the physical and digital world: the twin predicts behaviour, and real-world results refine the twin further.
Where Businesses Use Digital Twins
Manufacturers use digital twins to simulate production lines and catch bottlenecks before they happen. Facilities teams model HVAC and power systems in a building twin to plan maintenance and cut energy waste. In IT and logistics, digital twins of networks or warehouses help test changes safely. The common thread is reducing costly real-world trial and error by testing first in the virtual copy.
