What Is RAM Speed?

RAM speed refers to how quickly your computer's memory can read and write data, usually advertised in MHz (like DDR4-3200 or DDR5-6000). Faster RAM can, in theory, move data to and from the processor more quickly, but real-world impact depends heavily on what you're actually doing with the computer.

MHz and CAS Latency Explained

The MHz number represents how many data transfers RAM can perform per second — higher is generally faster. CAS latency (CL), shown as a number like CL16 or CL30, represents the delay between a request being sent to the memory and the data being delivered — lower is better. Because these two numbers trade off against each other, comparing RAM by MHz alone can be misleading: a higher-MHz kit with worse latency can sometimes perform similarly to a lower-MHz kit with tighter latency.

Does RAM Speed Actually Matter?

For everyday tasks — browsing, office work, video calls — RAM speed makes very little practical difference, and having enough capacity (16GB or more) matters far more than a few hundred extra MHz. For gaming, particularly with certain processors that benefit more from faster memory, and for content creation tasks like video editing and 3D rendering, faster RAM can provide a measurable, if usually modest, performance improvement. In most cases, prioritising adequate capacity and a reliable brand over chasing the highest MHz number is the more cost-effective choice for both home and business computers.
