What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a heating and cooling system that works by moving heat from one place to another rather than generating heat by burning fuel. In winter, it extracts available heat from the outside air (even when it feels cold) and moves it indoors; in summer, it reverses the process, pulling heat from inside the home and releasing it outdoors — effectively acting as an air conditioner and heater in one unit.

Why It's More Efficient Than Traditional Heating

Traditional furnaces and electric heaters generate heat directly, converting fuel or electricity into warmth at best around a 1-to-1 ratio. A heat pump instead moves existing heat using a small amount of electricity to run a compressor, often delivering three to four units of heat energy for every one unit of electricity consumed. This efficiency is why heat pumps typically cost less to run over a year compared to resistance heating, even though the upfront installation cost can be higher.

Where Heat Pumps Work Best

Heat pumps perform best in moderate climates where extreme sub-zero temperatures are rare, since their efficiency drops as outdoor temperatures fall very low, though modern cold-climate models have significantly closed this gap. They suit homes and offices looking to replace separate heating and cooling systems with a single efficient unit, and are increasingly recommended as part of broader efforts to reduce energy consumption and lower electricity bills.
