What Is Laboratory Automation?

Laboratory automation is the use of robotic instruments, sensors and software to carry out repetitive laboratory tasks — sample handling, pipetting, testing, analysis — with minimal manual intervention. It spans everything from a single automated analyser in a small diagnostic lab to fully robotic sample-handling lines in large reference laboratories.

How Automated Labs Operate

In an automated lab, samples are typically barcoded on arrival and tracked automatically as they move between instruments, with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) coordinating which test runs on which sample, capturing results directly from the instrument, and flagging any that fall outside expected ranges for review. This removes much of the manual transcription and labelling that used to be a major source of lab errors.

Benefits of Lab Automation

The benefits are faster turnaround times, fewer transcription errors, better traceability of every sample from receipt to report, and the ability to handle much higher testing volumes without proportionally increasing headcount. For diagnostic and research labs alike, automation combined with a solid LIMS is increasingly the baseline expectation rather than a competitive advantage.
