What Is a Circuit Breaker?

A circuit breaker is a safety switch that automatically shuts off electrical current when it detects a fault, such as too much current flowing through a circuit (an overload) or a short circuit where current takes an unintended path. By cutting power the instant a fault is detected, it prevents overheating, electrical fires, and damage to appliances and wiring.

Common Types

A standard breaker protects against overloads and short circuits. A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker adds protection against electric shock by detecting current leaking to ground, commonly required in kitchens and bathrooms near water. An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) detects dangerous electrical arcing that can occur in damaged wiring, a leading cause of electrical fires, and is increasingly required in bedrooms and living areas in modern electrical codes.

What to Do When One Keeps Tripping

A breaker that trips occasionally after plugging in a high-draw appliance (like a heater or microwave) is usually just doing its job by preventing an overload. But a breaker that trips repeatedly, immediately, or without an obvious cause can indicate a wiring fault, a failing appliance, or an overloaded circuit that needs rebalancing. Repeatedly resetting a breaker without investigating the cause is a safety risk — persistent tripping should be checked by a qualified electrician rather than ignored.
